What is the meaning of Kanak Dhara?

Kanakdhara is a stotram or hymn for Goddess Lakshmi. The word Kanakdhara is made up of two Sanskrit words, ‘Kanak’ and ‘Dhara’. Kanak means gold whereas dhara means the flow. Thus the word Kanakdhara means the flow of gold.

Story of Kanak Dhara

There is an interesting meaning and story attached to the word. AdiShankara was a well known learned and philosopher of Hindu religion from the ancient times. He took Sanyasa at a very young age of eight. At such a small age he was wandering on the earth. On one fine day, he was roaming here and there to get some alms. He came to a house of a very poor Brahmin lady. The ladies’ financial condition was not at all good. Adi Shakankara didn’t realize this and begged for alms.

The lady ran in the entire house, searching every corner to find something edible for the sage but failed to find so. Finally she found one Amla (gooseberry) and offered it to him. Adi Shanakara was really moved by seeing such a selfless gesture of the lady.

On his way back, he sang 21 hymns in praise of Goddess Lakshmi. Seeing such a devotion and soulful singing, Goddess Lakshmi appeared before him and asked the reason for his devotional singing. She granted Adi Shanakara with a wish. He asked the Goddess to grant the poor lady with enormous riches and wealth. Goddess Lakshmi hesitated to do so as the lady didn’t have any good karma in her life.

Adi Shankara told Maa Lakshmi the kind gesture the poor lady showed for him. Upon hearing it, Goddess Lakshmi instantly granted the Brahmin lady with showering gold gooseberries along with abundant wealth and riches. Thus, chanting these 21 stanzas or hymns of Kanaka Dhara gets an immediate relief from financial crises.
